Malus ‘Sutyzam’ Sugar Tyme™
Landscape value: A vigorous new Crab Apple that is attractive throughout the year. Malus ‘Sutyzam’ Sugar Tyme™ is an excellent choice for small parks and gardens where space is limited. May also be suitable for street planting.
Height: 6 metres.
Width: 4.5 metres.
Growth rate: Moderate.
Habit: Upright oval-rounded, open branched.
Foliage: Bright green narrow leaves with a sharply serrated margin turn yellow in autumn.
Flowers: Fragrant. Pale pink buds opening to single snow white flowers in spring.
Fruit: Vivid red crab apples on long slender stalks, maturing in autumn and persisting well into winter. Highly ornamental.
Bark: Greyish-brown. Shiny, becoming scaly.
Tolerances: Very hardy. Adaptable to varied soil conditions, but prefers a moist, fertile, well drained acidic soil. Reported (overseas) to have very good disease resistance.
Comments: Should be planted in full sun for optimum flowering and fruiting. Highly floriferous, easily cultivated small tree.
Malus ioensis ‘Plena’
Landscape value: Probably the most commonly planted of all Crab Apples, predominantly for its excellent spring floral display, this small growing tree also features very good autumn colour. The Bechtel Crab Apple is a good choice for small to medium landscape projects or where space is limited.

Growth rate: Slow to moderate.
Habit: Broad spreading with a rounded crown. Slow growing in the early years.
Foliage: Green leaves with distinct, coarsely serrated margins. Rich dark red and orange in autumn.
Flowers: Masses of mildly fragrant, double flowers in groups of three to five in late spring. The outer petals of the buds are a soft, delicate pink and open to large, rose-like flowers with prominent yellow stamens. At full bloom the tree is a floral mass.
Fruit: A sparse quantity of small green crab apples.
Bark: Greyish-brown. Shiny, becoming scaly.
Tolerances: Prefers slightly acidic, well drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Does not tolerate soils of high pH well.
Comments: Spray for apple scab if required. Also available top-grafted onto a ‘tall’ standard at approximately 1.8 metres.
